PROJECT DESCRIPTION I
The project will manufacture refined edible oil fir the domestic and export markets
Kenya imports large quantities of edible oil that can be substitude with local production.
local production of edible oil is dominated by East Africa Industries using mainly
imported Palm oil. To reduce the heavy dependency on imports, the project will produce
oil from cotton, and sunflower seeds, maize germ and simsim The by-products like oil
cake, and fatty acids will be ready inputs for the manufacture of animal feeds soap and
other chemical products
EDIBLE OIL
The Project is seeking promotors and investors
CAPACITY:
Production is projected at 65,000 mt. of edible oil per year. Given current level of
imports
and domestic demand this capacity can be reached within third year of operation.
RAW MATERIALS:
The raw materials for edible oil are mainly groundnuts, sunflower and cotton seeds and
maize germ. Local production of these raw materials is projected at 10.0 million mt by
the
year 2(X)5 of which over 5.0 million mt. are expected lo come from the l lake basin
Region
alone, a potential candidate location for the project.
At present only sunflower and cotton seeds a part from imported palm oil are used ill
the manufacture of edible oils, while maize and grounds are being used as food crops.
The project will encourage expension in the cultivation of these oil bearing crops to
increase raw materials availability in future
LOCATION
The plant can be located in areas with large surplus of raw materials. Kakamega Kisii and
Migori districts are suitable candidate locations for the project.
